The Mazandaran kilims produced for local use in the Caspian region of Northwest Iran represent one of the most authentic traditions of Persian rug weaving, although their minimalist approach to design often appears strikingly modern in its graphic simplicity.
This lovely piece has a design of horizontal stripes or bands in alternating lighter and darker shades of tan, in all natural, undyed wool. Each vertical column was woven separately, with the relative width of each band determined by the weaver’s instinct. The various columns were then sewn together and jogged to attain a staggered effect in the bands. As such each of these kilims is unique, with its own distinctive visual texture. Here the modulation of tones is especially subtle and delicate, almost allowing the bold, nubby textural qualities of the woven surface to become the primary focus.
