Vertical bands in deep, rusty terracotta alternate with dark ochre to produce the design of this beautifully colorful antique Kurdish Pelas. There is considerable tonal variation or ‘abrash’ within each band, but the weaver has added another subtle note of complexity the fine dark pencil stripes that graphically embellish each broader band with a welter of linear highlights. The result is a smoky chiaroscuro that enhances or enlivens the already rich color effects.
