This highly dramatic antique Kelardasht kilim has a design of horizontal midnight blue bands alternating with narrow red stripes, with additional dark pinstripes accenting the red. Each vertical column was woven separately, with the relative width of each band determined by spontaneously. The various columns were then sewn together and jogged to attain a staggered effect in the bands. To emphasize the ends of the piece, wider red stripes alternate with pale yellow ones, along with the blue, and there is additional sewn embellishment. But such detail is contained or limited, thereby stressing the consistent simplicity of the field.
