This charming antique Bidjar kilim has a design composed in various shades of tan and brown. The order or rhythm of alternation is irregular but dynamic, the result of the weaver’s instinct and impulse, as are the subtler gradations of color within each band, which appear here like the figured grain of hardwood. The one large band serves as a kind of visual anchor for the entire composition, while the thin dark brown stripes function as accents for the adjacent broader bands. The mixture of light and dark shade that make up the dark brown color have a distinct texture as well that make the color effects function as a kind of sculptural relief.
