Antique Fereghan carpets tend to interpret classical Persian rug designs within a somewhat freer, more stylized and dynamic village rug approach. But they generally have medallion designs, not allover patterns like this rather distinctive example. Here the field consists of abstract shrubs with spiral volute branches in a staggered, alternating inverted arrangement. Through rendered mostly in blue, they additional accent branches in ivory that light up the design, especially against the rich wine red ground. The border adapts this approach to a vinescroll pattern with the white set against a navy ground for contrast to the field. The already rich color is enhanced by the supple luminous pile.
