This distinctive little antique Aubusson carpet has an uncustomary charm and immediacy, in contrast to the stately Neo-classical formality more typical of such carpets. Here in place of richly molded cartouches and pendant garlands we encounter a lovely circular medallion embellished by a central leafy rosette, a surrounding wreath of roses, and a scalloped flowery outer corolla. The field is otherwise decorated only by a fine, tone-on-tone diaper pattern of small rosettes, more textural than ornamental. A main border with a delicate little acanthus vinescroll frames the field, reinforced only by several guard stripes. The palette of soft earthen and pastel colors is entirely appropriate to the understated beauty of the design.
