Though a tribal or village weaving, this unusual Shiraz kilim has a compartment garden design derived from classical Persian rug design. But instead being filled with floral motifs, the various squares contain finely textured allover designs of cruciform elements with diagonal color effects, while the borders of the grid have diagonal patterns of stylized cloudband or ‘dragon’ forms. The main border is a multi-colored zig-zag, with an outermost reciprocal trefoil minor border. The overall effect is like a finely tessellated mosaic.
