At first glance the design of this Qashqai seems simply to rely solely on the alternation of rich red and midnight blue vertical bands. As such it would be pleasing enough, especially considering the extraordinary quality and beauty of the color. But closer inspection reveals a series of slightly darker horizontal striated bands, which create a latent plaid or checkered pattern across the entire surface. The piece is also unusual by virtue of its long tasseled and braided hanging cords, which were seldom preserved when these kilims reached the West.
