Although quite colorful, this antique Qashqai Pelas has a stately, reserved quality resulting from the underlying discipline of its design. The pattern appears simple enough – vertical stripes of black alternating with yellow ochre, and rust red alternating with light green. But this alternation is carefully organized, with two areas of red and green about a single, broader central red column, flanked in turn by symmetrical wings of black and ochre. Consequently, the design is balanced and yet carefully rhythmic at the same time, all within an illusory impression of spontaneity.
