Bands of earthen tones ranging from darkest brown to softest tan repeat rhythmically down the length of this Bidjar kilim. The grouping of the various shades is improvised and irregular, though following a certain pulse of broader tan areas separated by narrower dark bands. But upon closer inspection, even the broad areas have considerable internal variation, consisting as they do of multiple bands with only minimal contrast. The design is deceptively simple. Within it there is a complexity that only emerges for those who take the trouble to look.
