At times, when they utilize lush floral motifs in soft reds, yellows and greens against an ivory ground, small-scale Lavar Kerman rugs like this one take the quality of classical Mughal rugs or Suzani embroideries. In this example the field pattern consists of a large central rosette medallion surrounded by scalloped cornerpieces, all rendered in a delicate arabesque tracery that recalls the stained glass rose-windows of Gothic cathedrals. The design density is incredibly uniform across the surface of the carpet; the borders are distinguished from the field primarily by fine outlines. And all the while the underlying ivory ground imparts an incredible clarity and lightness to a highly complex design.
