Though steeped in classical Persian tradition, Fereghan carpets may still embody the sort of geometric abstraction or stylization reminiscent of tribal or village weaving. As such they offer sophisticated, precise classical design, but blended with the freer, dynamic spontaneity of the village rug weaver. Here the soft burgundy ground field consists of an allover design of floral sprays – palmettes, blossoms, serrated leaves, and arabesques arranged with vines as a mina khani or trellis pattern. The fine detail of the design is nicely punctuated by larger framing cartouches that anchor the more delicate details within a larger though subtle structure. A contrasting lacelike blue-ground main border of fine vines spouting large blossoms and palmettes in alternation frames the field, along with multiple fine minor borders of tiny vinescol. Despite its precision, the overall effect is nonetheless gracefully dynamic and alive – Fereghan weaving at its best.
